Lake Huron is home to a sinkhole that could reveal the secrets about early life on Earth.
The Middle Island Sinkhole was formed by groundwater eroding away the limestone lakebed. The high sulfur, low oxygen water makes the sinkhole inhospitable to fish, but creates conditions for microbes resembling the first life to evolve on our planet.
Scientists like Dr. Bopi Biddanda are studying the sinkhole, hoping to uncover clues about what life was like more than 2 billion years ago.
